Jinhua Yang
Jinhua Yang received her BFA from East Carolina University in 2025, with a concentration in ceramics and graphic design. Her work focuses on wild clay and atmospheric firings, drawn to the unpredictability of local materials and how they change through wood, soda, and salt kilns. She digs and processes her own wild clay, testing it from the ground up and letting each batch speak for itself. Ash, flashing, and surface variation become visible traces of time, fire, and place.
Working primarily in functional pottery, she cares deeply about how a piece feels in the hand as much as how it looks. Her work balances use and process, emphasizing tactility and subtle surface shifts. She completed a residency at Red Lodge Clay Center and interned at the North Carolina Pottery Center, experiences that strengthened her technical skills in kiln firing and clay research while connecting her to a larger ceramic community.
